Speed Mate-ing @ Headrow House, 19/3/18

Monday 19th March saw the first Speed Mate-ing event hosted by our friends at Girl Gang Leeds. Described as being “like tinder for friends”, I nervously headed down to Headrow House to join the “friendship revolution” to truly push myself out of my comfort zone and hopefully meet some lovely ladies and non-binary folk.

I walked in and was greeted with a friendly smile which instantly make me feel better and as I looked round the room every person I made eye contact with smiled back. I realised that actually, the kind of people who would come to an event with the purpose of making friends hosted by a feminist, creative community that aims to create “fun, safe and empowering spaces” are probably the best kind of strangers to be in a room with.

The event was hosted by Megan from Girl Gang Manchester, who had already hosted similar events. Megan put us all at ease, made sure the event was running to time and introduced the different discussion pieces. These ranged from 3 minutes discussing ‘would you rather …’ topics to having a 9-minute problem solving session with a person you have never met. Turns out it is oddly cathartic pouring your heart out to a stranger! The night ended with us getting into groups of 10 and making freeze frames of films, an exercise you may remember from Year 8 Drama, but in a room full of warm, supportive people as opposed to the horrible gits you went to school with!

I honestly can’t recommend the next event enough, it is a great way to meet new people, grow your confidence and try something completely different!
