Megan Jones picks out her favourite podcasts for you to be listening to this month!
Made of Human Podcast (MOHPOD) – Hosted by Danish comedian (and previous Girls that Gig interviewee) Sofie Hagen, the MOHPOD talks to an intersection of awesome humans about how to do life and how to feel less alone. Previous guests include Josie Long, activist Blair Imani and artist/activist/status-quo challenger Scottee. Each podcast starts with an ‘Act of Disobedience’ where a listener shares their story of smashing the patriarchy, acting out against the norm or just generally being a badass. Sofie is sensitive, understanding and personable which makes for wonderfully insightful interviews with incredible people who are all challenging and changing the world around them.
The Guilty Feminist – “The podcast in which we explore our noble goals as 21st-century feminists and our hypocrisies and insecurities which undermine them.” That sums it up perfectly really. Deborah Francis White hosts this largely female podcast that starts each episode with “I’m a feminist but …” making you feel better about wanting to be feminist but also looking nice when you go to the tip so the men will help you get your stuff out of the car. Each episode is recorded in front of a live audience with each show supporting and promoting a charity that helps women in the UK and overseas. The episodes are themed and has special guests and co-hosts contributing.
Reasons to be Cheerful with Ed Miliband and Geoff Lloyd – Launched in only September last year, this weekly podcast has already had a mix of awesome guests, including the Prime Minister of Iceland Katrín Jakobsdóttir talking about her innovative policy to address the gender pay gap, and Director-General of the Swedish Prison Service Nils Oberg, who discusses why their system works so much better than ours in pretty much every way! It’s not all serious stuff though, each guest gives a reason to be cheerful after discussing their topic and at the end a comedian joins the to give us all some more reasons to be cheerful. It’s entertaining, intelligent and extremely thought provoking.
Stuff Mom Never Told You – This is the podcast that got me into podcasts. It has been going for years so there are literally hundreds of episodes to choose from. They cover topics that affect women and look at history, art, media, business, influential ladies and everything in between. The show is currently on its third hosts: Bridget and Emily. My favourite hosts were Cristen and Caroline, who just left to start up Unladylike Media. There are some great episodes about the comfort women of Japan, Hilary Clinton and Taylor Swift’s feminism, to name a few.
All Killa No Filla – If you like serial killers and no-holds-barred lady chat then this is the podcast for you! As you can imagine, given the premise, it can get quite gruesome so is definitely not for the faint hearted. Hosted by close friends and comedians Kiri Pritchard-Mclean and Rachel Fairburn, there is no filter between their chat, which can get pretty personal and pretty filthy: as I said, not for the faint hearted! The roughly hour-long episodes cover a different serial killer each week with some special three-parters for the more complicated stories, such as Fred and Rose West and Alieen Wuornos. I only recently started listening to this one and have become hooked immediately; rumour has it they are going to be bringing a live recording to Leeds soon so will be keeping an eye out for that!
