Austin guitar hero St Vincent will be heading to O2 Academy Leeds on Tuesday 28th August to perform with a full band. After the release of her 2017 record Masseduction, St Vincent, a.k.a Annie Clark, set off on a headline tour which boldly featured just her on stage. Woe betide those that think that solo means boring. Clark’s show was theatrical to the extreme, featuring several costume changes and many brightly-coloured guitars. If Clark can bring the drama and hold an audience on her own, a full band promises masseduction to the max.
Clark has enjoyed a rather exciting rise to fame in recent years. Her self-titled album featured brilliantly crafted electronic-cum-rock tracks that made her eclecticism accessible. With such righteous lyrics as “take out the garbage, masturbate”, Clark made it clear that she’s here to stay, take her or leave her.
Masseduction is probably her most personal album yet. With achingly melancholic tracks like ‘Happy Birthday Johnny’ and ‘New York’, Clark documents her privacy in teasing tones, letting you in with a glimpse, but keeping you at arm’s length from getting any real sort of look-in.
St Vincent rarely makes it across the pond, so this is surely a show that ought not to be missed. Be there or be square.
