August gig guide

With pride at the beginning of the month and Leeds Fest at the end, August is a BIG month on the Leeds music scene. Take a look at Girls That Gig’s favourite artists touring around Leeds and Manchester this month.

KT Tunstall @ Millenium Square Leeds August 11th

From ‘Big Black Horse And The Cherry Tree’ to ‘Suddenly I See’ and ‘Other Side Of The World’, Scottish singer songwriter KT Tunstall sprung to popularity with her uplifting acoustic style. In 2006 KT Tunstall was named Best British Female Solo Artist at the Brits. A move to L.A. injected a power pop vibe to KT Tunstall’s music which you can see from 2016 album Kin.

KT Tunstall will be going Simple Minds as part of Millennium Square’s summer series.

Princess Nokia @ Belgrave Music Hall Leeds August 21st

Proudly independent rapper and feminist Princess Nokia a.k.a. New Yorker Destiny Frasqueri comes to Leeds later this month with a sold-out gig at the Belgrave Music Hall.

Heralded as the queen of queer goth, Princess Nokia has a versatile performance and producing style that ranges from hip hop to emo.

Power is in communities for Princess Nokia, who was brought up in foster care. Her multi-lingual sets shout to her Harlem hood girls, ancestry and those who brought her up as Princess Nokia explores her identity and who she is as an artist.

Pussy Riot @ Stylus Leeds August 21st

You may recognise this feminist art collective  and occasional punk band from when they made the headlines protesting at the re-election of Vladimir Putin in 2012.

Coming from a background of flashmob style performances all around Russia, Pussy Riot have said that they will never conform to the capitalist system of the music system, such as ticketed events.

With a mix of abrasive guitar riffs and  politically charged lyrics, you can expect the unexpected on the 21st.
